Protecting Mount Latimojong
South Sulawesi, Indonesia
Rising to 11,411 ft (3,478 metres) above sea level, it is the highest mountain on the island of Sulawesi. Its vast range in elevation supports a remarkable diversity of ecosystems, from lush lowland rainforests to montane habitats, home to countless endemic and endangered species.
The area is currently threatened by overtourism and agricultural expansion. Its protection would have an expansive positive effect on watersheds, trickling down into the valleys and surrounding landscapes.
Led by the Nature Conservation Agency of South Sulawesi, this conservation initiative hopes to redesignate the area into National Park status, which would foster sustainable land management and generate local revenue.
